Joining our Volunteer Fire Dept

BMFPD is always looking for good people to join the department. There are many roles to fill including structural firefighters, wildland firefighters, emergency medical response, engine crew, administrative and support roles, evacuation assistance, animal rescue, etc. We can match your skills and interests with our needs on the department, and train you as necessary. Click here for volunteer opportunities and expectations. Everyone on the department except the Chief and mitigation crew is a volunteer.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE VOLUNTEERS

Who Should Join

You should be able to respond to 911 calls in our district in a timely manner. For this reason, our general rule is that our members live within our district. As an emergency response volunteer, you will be expected to attend a pre-defined number of trainings, provide support for the maintenance of the stations, trucks and equipment, and respond to calls. The exact level of involvement is up to you, within the limits set in our Volunteer and Employee Handbook. We have training sessions 2-3 times per month, in the evenings and weekends (see training calendar for regular training sessions).

For administration and certain support roles, incident response and training attendance may not be required.

When Can You Join

We accept membership applications year round, but we have two Rookie training classes each year, starting around January and July.

Getting Started

When you join the team, you will be required to receive Officer and Board approval, as well as pass a background check. You will then be designated a "Rookie" member until you develop the necessary skills, which should take up to a year. You can help out and contribute right away as a Rookie member, but your responsibilities will be limited for your own safety and you will be given additional supervision.

Whether you want to drive an engine or enter a burning building, emergency response volunteers need to go through our Rookie program. The intent is to teach basic skills and equipment familiarization, learn about the department, allow the department to learn about you and above all provide for your safety and the safety of others. The expectation is to attend at least one to two regular trainings per month in addition to a 24 hour Rookie Academy (a long weekend) and complete a task book. There is some self-study work to be completed also. This program can take up to a year, part of which will be spent responding to calls .

Welcome Aboard

Once accepted as a Rookie member, the following steps will take place:

• You will be required to attend our New Member Rookie Academy and complete our Rookie Task Book.
• You will receive our Volunteer and Employee Handbook which contains detailed procedures and policies.
• You will be given an orientation session to get acquainted with the department, followed by basic training to get you up to speed on the basics.
• You will be given access to the members-only portion of this web site which contains useful information for you.
• You will be placed on our group email list for various announcements.
• Start training! You can check the online calendar to find out the time and place of the next training session. Plan to attend as many as you can. There are also courses available for you to take. The station houses contain books and videos for training purposes.
• At some point, once you have acquired the necessary basic training, you will also be given a pager so you can be notified of emergency calls, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and clothing with our logo, such as a hat and T-shirt.

AUXILIARY VOLUNTEERS

We have an active Fire Department Auxiliary who support fundraising and various non-emegency firefighter support activities, such as providing coffee and snacks at monthly station work sessions

THE THIRD ARM VOLUNTEERS

The Third Arm comprises four major areas of activity:

• Traffic control and direction during fire emergencies.
• Emergency evacuation assistance for people and animals during fire incidents
• Data collection
• A help coordination function during emergencies to put people who need help in contact with people who are willing and in a position to help.

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Seven residents serve on the Board of Directors, each representing different wards (defined areas of the district). They serve four year terms, on a staggered basis. Elections are held in May during odd numbered years. At times, a director cannot fulfill his or her term, then someone is appointed as their replacement.
